Welcome

This is a place for those who wish to remember and celebrate the life and work of artist John Heap.

John studied at Reading University and Chelsea Art College in the late 60s and early 70s, then settled in south London, where he lived and painted for the next 50 years.

He painted what he saw around him - his favourite objects within his home, views from his windows, his gardens, his friends and himself. Or he created abstract images, or a mixture of both. He seldom made an effort to sell his work or bring it to a wider audience, painting simply for the enjoyment (and perhaps therapy) that it provided.

When he died, in January 2021, John left a collection of some 250 of his paintings. Over the years, there had been many more. Some were doubtless destroyed or over-painted, others were given to friends and family, and a few were sold. Perhaps you're lucky enough to own some of John's work. If so, we'd love hear from you.

As of August 2022, the process of photographing and cataloguing the paintings that John left, then curating them into an online 'virtual gallery' is still ongoing. But you can see the interim results here.

If you have any questions or suggestions regarding this website or John and his work, or you have memories you'd like to share, please get in touch. You can email me at martin@johnheap.org.
